As of January 1, 2008, OSMI has been in network with all
major insurance carriers in central Ohio with the exception of
United Health Care and Medicaid. This in-network availability will be a
major convenience when seeking high quality and comprehensive
Sleep Medicine care. Through
a devotion to patient care and continuous education and
research, our total effort is focused on improving the quality
of life for those experiencing sleep disorders.
The
Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute believes in providing quality
sleep medicine care, in which patients' autonomy and
confidentiality are protected while providing the basic
principles of beneficence and nonmaleficence.
Ohio
Sleep Medicine Institute presents continuing medical education
activities to enhance study and learning throughout the
professional life of every physician. The Ohio Sleep Medicine
Institute will, therefore, facilitate the availability of
accredited continuing medical educational activities for all
physicians in the state of Ohio. These activities will be
designed to educate medical professionals with the hope that it
will lead to better patient care throughout the medical
community. The Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute and it's continuing
medical education activities will advocate effective,
dependable, new medications, treatments, or products that affect
those with sleep disorders. Furthermore, we will utilize the
most up-to-date, reliable knowledge and current technology in
the diagnosis and treatment of those with sleep disorders.
The
Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute continuing medical education
activities shall be consistent with the established essentials
and standards of the Ohio State Medical Association. The Ohio
State Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education to develop educational
activities for physicians, they have established and maintained
procedures for the development and implementation of formally
structured educational activities which meet established
criteria for educational planning and quality.
It
is the intent of the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute to provide
these educational experiences by developing, implementing,
consulting, and evaluating continuing medical education
activities based upon the needs, interests, and geographical
distribution of the physicians in Ohio.
Helmut
S. Schmidt, MD, is the Founder and President of the
Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute and
was the first president of the American Board of Sleep Medicine
(ABSM). Regarded as a pioneer of sleep medicine, he opened the
first sleep disorders center and clinic in February, 1975 in
Ohio. In 1988, Dr. Schmidt received the Nathaniel Kleitman
Distinguished Prize from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine,
formally the ASDA, which is that body's highest award for
outstanding achievement and contribution to the field. He was
also the first recipient of the "Shoebox Award" from
the American Board of Sleep Medicine, for "unstinting"
dedication to the furtherance of the field, and in 1995 that
same board decided to rename the "Shoebox Award" to
the "Helmut S. Schmidt, MD Award."
Our
Medical Director, Markus H. Schmidt, MD, PhD, began
his long commitment to sleep early in life, growing up with the
influence of his father,
Helmut S. Schmidt, MD, who is considered a pioneer in the field
of Sleep Medicine.
Dr. Markus Schmidt became a student volunteer, after school, for
the Sleep Disorders Center at the Western Psychiatric Institute
in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He then continued his involvement in
Sleep Medicine research throughout his undergraduate training at
the University of Toronto where he completed his undergraduate
thesis on sleep under the direction of world renowned Dr. Allan
Rechtschaffen from the University of Chicago. He completed his
doctoral research at the preeminent neurophysiology sleep
laboratory of Professor Michel Jouvet in Lyon, France. Dr.
Markus Schmidt received his MD and PhD from the Medical College
of Ohio in 1999. He was an intern at Riverside Methodist
Hospital in Internal Medicine, and completed his residency in
Neurology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
