Breaking Research From
Markus H. Schmidt, MD, PHD
(The ONLY Second Generation Sleep Medicine Physician
In The World!)
DUBLIN, OH--
Sleep-related erections are a natural occurring phenomena of REM
(Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Sleep studies have thus been used as a
clinical tool to evaluate erectile dysfunction. The question is-
where in the brain does this control come from?
Markus H. Schmidt,
MD, PhD recently identified two new areas in the brain which are
involved in erectile control. Currently no pharmacological
treatments are available to treat erectile dysfunction at the
level of the central nervous system. Discoveries like this may
eventually help develop treatments for erectile dysfunction.
Markus H. Schmidt,
MD, PhD is the unprecedented recipient of the Cleveland Clinic's
Neuroscience Award for three consecutive years! In addition, he is
the two-time recipient of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine's
(AASM) Young Investigator Award; and also received in June of this
year the Sleep Research Society's (SRS) Young Investigator Award
all for the above mentioned research that was published in the
prestigious Journal of Neuroscience. The SRS promotes the
understanding of the mechanisms of sleep and its disorders through
research.
Dr. Markus Schmidt,
has just joined the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute, bringing his
extensive background in neuroscience research and clinical
neurology experience to the practice. This addition to the
practice will make the Ohio Sleep Medicine Institute, located in
Dublin, the ONLY FATHER/SON, SECOND GENERATION, SLEEP MEDICINE
PHYSICIANS IN THE WORLD!!
In his father's
footsteps (Helmut S. Schmidt, MD - one of the founding fathers of
Sleep Medicine), Dr. Markus Schmidt started his commitment to
sleep research during high school working with his father at the
Ohio State University. He then continued his involvement in Sleep
Medicine research throughout his undergraduate training at the
University of Toronto where he completed an undergraduate thesis
on Sleep Medicine under the direction of Dr. Allan Rechtschaffen
at the University of Chicago. He completed his doctoral research
in Lyon, France at the renowned sleep lab of Professor Michel
Jouvet, the world famous discover of REM Sleep Control. Dr. Markus
Schmidt received his MD and PhD from the Medical College of Ohio,
completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Riverside
Methodist Hospital and completed his residency in Neurology at the
Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Markus Schmidt joined the Ohio
Sleep Medicine Institute in July.
